I believe they offer bereavement only because it is mandatory, because there is little to no empathy when it is needed. They offer up to 3 days and they must be taken at the same time

I had to bring in a copy of the newspaper with my grandfather's obituary to prove there was actually a funeral, in order to get bereavement leave approved! How demeaning!
