The Army offers a defined benefit pension for active-duty soldiers after 20 years of service, which pays a monthly retirement benefit for life. This benefit is calculated based on a percentage of the highest 36 months of basic pay and the years of creditable service. Additionally, all service members who entered active duty on or after January 1, 2018, are part of the Blended Retirement System (BRS), which combines the defined benefit with defined contributions to the Federal Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).
