As a former recruiter, I promise some companies (smaller ones especially), do read cover letters. Had round 4 interview last week. About 1hr before the interview, the hiring manager tells me I’m his favorite but his boss decided to sit in on the interview and he “can be a lot to handle.” I got some tips but he was so nervous, he made me nervous. The interview was a wreck. HM was basically silent the whole time while his boss pushed back on everything I said. I fumbled. Today, I was notified that they went with another candidate. I’m oc disappointed but I also feel like I dodged a bullet?
I hate when they ask why I want the job. Like hello... I need a paycheck. Kidding (kind of), but obviously everyone is going to answer that in a way that reveals they are best fit, not honest. Give me some questions that make me think. Give us room to show true personality.
🤣 consider me a hobo then. But seriously, the only thing worse than these two questions is awkward forced small talk as if the whole interview process isn't uncomfortable enough.
I don’t mind that question, not my favorite, but I at least have an answer ready to go for it. The absolute worst questions are when they try to be creative. What superpower would you pick? Sir/Ma’am, is this a legitimate workplace? I’m not so sure now.
Just tell them your learning style, bro. "I'm a visual learner. I need to see things to learn. It's difficult for me to learn just by hearing." Or vice versa. Something like that. Easy peasy.
My least favorite question I've ever been asked was, "why DON'T you want to work for us?" It was really awkward and weird and I had to scramble to think of something that seemed honest but not too insulting. I ended up accidentally deeply insulting the manager and she basically ended the interview right there. I mean, don't ask questions you don't want the answer to!
Toilet paper: over or under? lol sometimes I think Interviewers get bored and start crossing the lines just to shake things up a bit.
Who is still asking these questions? Avoid those companies at all costs.
