Their interview process ended up being much longer and less transparent than what was initially communicated. I was originally told the process would consist of a recruiter screen, a technical discussion, an in-person onsite, and then an offer decision. However, before the onsite they added a “TypeScript practical,” which was actually just a React coding exercise without TypeScript. I completed that and then went through the onsite. After the onsite, they added yet another step: a conversation with the co-founders, followed by references if that went well—none of which had been disclosed upfront. I provided a wide range of availability for the co-founder conversation, but they scheduled it more than a week out. Then, on a Sunday, they asked if I could meet sooner, which I accommodated. I felt that conversation went well, but it still took nearly another week before they ultimately decided to reject me.

Initial screening call with the recruiter was respectful, pleasant, and shared the role responsibilities and challenges pretty well. It did seem that the company is going through typical start up growth pains and are looking for someone that will commit a lot of time and energy into the typical start up rollercoaster.
