ONLINE: Fill out the information as clearly and accurately as possible. They use this information if you make it to the face to face interview. Once you’ve submitted the application, you will be emailed about a preliminary online assessment. The assessment is all agree/disagree from what I remember. Be honest as agreeing to things like “I’ve never made a mistake” will obviously throw up a red flag.
VIDEO INTERVIEW: If you pass the online assessment and make it to a video interview this is what you need to know. First, there is no interviewer on the other side at the time you take the interview. You will be asked questions by an automated program. Second, make sure that prior to taking the interview, you have sufficient light, a minimalistic background and professional attire. Third, make sure you test your computer’s microphone and clean the camera lens so that you look a clear as possible. Once this is done you’re ready to begin the interview. This is an assessment to see if you look presentable and if you can speak clearly. Answer the questions effectively, but pay close attention to your posture, smile and pronunciation. You get three minutes to answer questions and there are no opportunities to update a recording once it’s finished. Keep answers around 1-2 minutes so that if you make a speaking mistake, you have time to correct yourself.
FINAL INTERVIEW: You are very lucky if you make it this far so be proud! The face to face interview is more than it seems. You are interviewing the second you walk in, to the second you walk out. It is crucial that you are well dressed and social with the other candidates before the interview even starts. Arrive around one hour prior if possible. This gives you time to hydrate and get comfortable with the people you will be interviewing with. Once the interview begins, you’ll be taken to a room with 5-8 tables. I’ll skip over the presentation details and jump right to the interview tasks. You’ll compete a short exercise about ranking priorities during a flight and then there is an ice-breaker. During this time you will complete an activity with your table where you have to come up with three things you have in common with you table group, and then one unique trait about each person. FOLLOW EVERY INSTRUCTION EXACTLY. Recruiters will be walking around taking notes about how you handle this. Once you present, make sure it’s in the format that they emphasize. Once this is completed, you’ll be taken to a smaller group interview with two recruiters. Two questions are the same, one is unique. When answering, color your responses with details that sell your worth to the company without explicitly having to say “American Airlines should hire me because...”. The best responses in the group were the ones that were honest and not too drawn out. Rambling and/or not saying enough can be bad, so practice finding that middle ground. Once this is complete they will send you back into the original group interview room where they will give you a final PowerPoint presentation. This is where you’ll have a general idea of how you’ve done. If you go to a one on one, you’ll most likely be be offered a job. If they send you on your way, you’re most likely not getting the job. There are different experiences for everyone, but everyone who got the job during my session found out during the interview.
Hopefully this helps and good luck!
