Aveda is going through some major changes and it is apparent in their interview process and lack of organization. I was originally recruited to interview with them for a Sales Director position. I had 3 phone interviews and then a long pause between interviews and then they re-engaged me. I had a few more phone interviews with HR and my potential boss and was asked for an in person interview. I accommodated an odd schedule to meet for a rushed 1 hour interview at 7am out of town. After given me clarity on details and requesting I travel to meet my potential boss at her hotel, the in house recruiting team made travel arrangements that ended up being at the incorrect location. Luckily, I double checked the hotel details prior to taking off for my flight with my potential boss. She confirmed the location was wrong. She did not offer to help in any sort of rearrangement... not a great sign, so I rearranged the travel myself as this was the Sunday before... not a huge challenge, but not ideal way to start the process. The in person interview was rushed from the start as I only had 1 hour and had so many questions myself was in final interview steps with a few other positions. In retorspect and through all of my own experience interviewing candidates for my own teams and knowing this was getting down to the final step, I should have insisted on a minimum of 2+ hours in order to take the time to travel out of state/overnight to meet for the interview. It was very clear when I met the interviewer that she only had minimal time. Rapport building was non-existent. The experience was rushed and pointed. The behavioral questions that were asked were those that I had answered before on leadership skills and had previously given examples. The interviewer seemed annoyed at my questions about the position and didn’t really answer my questions. She talked thorough 70 percent of the interview and repeated a lot of what I already knew. I said to her in the waning minutes, I wish we had more time as I had more questions and more to share. In the end, I knew it would not be the right fit due to the climate of the interview. Aveda is a great brand and product line... hoping they can get this process more refined and organized. It was the least inspiring interview process I have been through in my career. The questions were open ended but there was a clear answer that the interviewer wanted me to say but I couldn’t quite interpret what that was or what she was looking for me to say exactly... but there was definitely something specific she needed. I would suggest working on new interview techniques that can help bring out someone’s best. I would suggest a few of the skills/culture assessments that many companies use now.
