I interviewed for the senior EM Role. I reached out to the recruiter through a connection and got the first call. I had a good chat with the recruiter and got scheduled to interview with the Director of Engineering. On the day, the director logged in and mentioned they could not take the interview as they were managing a production incident. They brought in a staff engineer to replace them as interviewer. As it probably was a last min thing for the interviewer, I checked if they would like to reschedule. They were fine to continue. This was supposed to be an HM round, they started off by asking about my background but were least interested in what I was saying and interrupted me several times. They asked me about a product/project I am really "PROUD" of as an EM. I asked some clarifying questions about the specific nature of the project they wanted me to talk about (Strategic, Impact, or technically complex). They mentioned I could choose any. As an EM, I started talking about a project that was high impact in terms of customer value and new ARR for the company. Again, they were least interested. Suddenly, they shared a hacker rank link and asked me to design the system I was talking about. Now, the project that I was talking about was somewhat technically complex. Still, I had another example of a technically complex project that I generally use for my Sys-Design questions. I started designing and explaining the design, even though this was supposed to be an HM round. This technical question caught me off guard. They asked some random questions about the queues that I was using and a question about a business flow that was not part of my design. They then asked me why I chose a Relational DB like Dynamo???? This is a Staff-level engineer who doesn't know Dynamo is a non-relational DB. I knew this was not heading in the right direction. A couple of days later, I got a rejection. I reached out to the recruiter and explained what had happened and requested if I could get the HM round with the Director. They did mention they would check and get back, but no response yet. After reading the company reviews, I think, I dodged a bullet.
