I was interviewed for a software engineering manager position in the ML/platform team, with a screen, two phone interviews, a take-home exercise then a full loop.
The take-home exercise consisted in writing an ETL script. It took me a day and a half to complete. I spent some of that time learning Pandas. It would have been nice to talk about the take-home exercise in the interview loop. Unfortunately they did not provide an opportunity to do so.
The full loop started with a 30-minute panel presentation followed by a series of one-on-one interviews. All the interviewers were from the team itself, with no participants from other teams.
• The behavioral questions went beyond the usual, although it felt as a conversation. They will probe for your ability to stand for what you believe in as a person, your product vision, as well as your grasp of values versus mission.
• The pure project/product questions were standard although fairly light. The only pointed questions were about JIRA. The team-related questions were a bit more in depth but without any challenges.
• The technical questions went through two designs, one coding exercise, and one devops discussion. The interviewers were evaluating the technical answers as much as the way to interact with the team.
They use CoderPad and Google Jamboard, with the overall interview done through Google Meet. It was my first time using Jamboard, without touchscreen to make the matter worst. I was disappointed in my result. Do yourself a favor and get a touchscreen to work with Jamboard.
All the interviewers were providing feedback, a nice touch particularly in the more technical segments. However I was asked the same questions from different interviewers and it happened multiple times. Be prepared with different samples of work if that happens to you.
Everyone was very friendly.
