      Interview

If you are interviewing for a Data Scientist role, quickly turn around and run.... Met with a recruiter - general fit and HR questions. Then met with the hiring manager, we talked about experience, and skills for the team. third round was with the team (2 data scientists) where we discussed ML and statistics topics, and my previous projects. Didn't really code or do anything too technical, but the conversations were in depth. Then met with the VP. This was when I could tell things were going sideways. I live in NYC, the role is in a suburb of Philadelphia, which I told the recruiter and the VP I would be happy to cover transportation on my own. I also have experience in marketing data science, and the role listed (which, 1. did not have that explicitly listed when I applied, and 2. is still up as of writing this LOL) was for retail data science. Without having direct experience in retail, marketing is the closest you can get. The VP seemed to only be concerned about retail and the location when talking to me. The recruiter didn't get back to me for some time, and eventually called some time later. The recruiter said the team was excited about my candidacy but also saying there was concern about the location / distance from where I lived, which I had already clarified that I would be OK covering. And then the lack of "retail" data experience was an issue. Hmmm... where did these pop up? They were ready to extend an offer if these were resolved. The recruiter, who was clearly fighting for me given that the team gave the thumbs up, tried to come up with creative and great solutions for these problems, including a contractor role short term. This dragged on for a month, with the recruiter saying they were working on approval, which the VP wouldn't sign because he was the one who was saying no.... Eventually, I realized it was going nowhere and I dropped it. Let me make this very clear: this VP displays the character of someone who I would not work for, and I would not hire. If you're going to say no, say it with your chest instead of saying a soft-no (i.e. ghosting) like a coward. To future candidates, apply and interview at your own risk. I dodged a bullet by not working here, I urge you to not apply to this bullet at all. I would recommend reading the first line of my review again.
