I was contacted by Carfax after I applied for a Manager position in order to set up a phone interview. I talked to the recruiter (Mark Sturges) for a while and he filled me in with details about the position and the company. However, the thing that I liked most was that for part of the conversation, we talked about drive-in movies (I had mentioned that I attended a summer drive-in movie in the parking lot of the Carfax office the prior summer). It was refreshing talking to a recruiter and having a real conversation - most are just hard sell, hard sell. Ultimately, I had a phone screen with the hiring manager and again, it was a good, down-to-earth conversation. The hiring manager described the position, some of the challenges of the role and asked about my experiences and approaches to some of those challenges. We had a really good interactive and collaborative discussion. They weren't quite ready to bring in candidates for in-person interviews but Mark regularly kept in contact with me and within a few weeks, I came in for an in-person interview. The interviews were "pair" interviews - 2 people interviewing you at once. First, I interviewed with 2 product managers from Marketing and then 2 IT Directors and finally a face-to-face interview with the hiring manager. In all 3, the interviews felt more like a conversation than just question and answer. I was impressed with the quality of people, how the business was run and the company culture. It was also clear that company culture and team fit were very, very important. I ultimately got the offer and prior to accepting, I had to confirm some insurance coverages since my daughter has a certain illness that requires a very expensive monthly shot. Mark went way above and beyond by working with the insurance carrier to confirm my daughter's shot was covered. Overall, this was a very smooth process - the BEST of any company that had interviewed me.
