      Backend Engineer Interview

      Nov 10, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Doist in Nov 2023

      Interview

Very concise, extremely well-structured, and friendly. Although my application was ultimately rejected, I would apply again without hesitation, as I felt respected and well-treated at every stage of the process. One aspect that could have been improved, and which may have worked against me, was the lack of opportunity to take a technical test. I really wanted to have the opportunity to put my heart and soul into it, to prove that although I might not have been the exact candidate they were looking for, I could do an exceptional job if challenged. I suspect this might be because the company, aiming to save funds as they are paying for such tests. I would have been willing to do it for free. But well again is just to say something as the process is just great :) Overall, it's the closest to perfection I've experienced in HR practices, and I highly recommend applying at Doist. They consistently respond to every application, whether for rejection or acceptance, and treat candidates humanely. This approach is increasingly rare and will be sorely missed in the future if AI continues to play a growing role in hiring processes.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Q: What is one time that you delivered more than you were asked for? Q: What makes a backend dev exceptional? Q: What is the difference between database sharding, partitioning, and replication? Q: How do you deal with conflicts (or something similar)? Then we inverted roles and it was me who had the opportunity of making questions.

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Doist in May 2024

      Interview

Super transparent. Everyone I communicated with was incredibly kind and professional. The first stage was mostly standard interview questions with some light technical questions to ensure you know the basics. The focus was definitely on the company values, but the interviewer did a great job framing things in a natural and relaxed way.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Doist in Jan 2024

      Interview

Interview process was prompt and courteous. I only made it through the first stage of interviews (Value alignment). The questions were well thought out seemed designed to gauge how well a candidate's personality meshed with Doist's core values (https://doist.com/about-us). The interviewer was very professional and provided clear feedback throughout the process. Ultimately, my Python experience didn't align with the specific technical skills needed for the role, so we stopped the interview process after the first round, but was still a great interview experience nonetheless.
