Interview
I wish I had seen this board earlier because I honestly wouldn't have bothered to apply with this company at all. I may be mistaken but my impression is that a travel consultant role at Flight Centre is basically entry-level (at least the salary is!) and to have all these expectations for a selection process is nonsense. Anyway, I'll outline my interview process to clue people into what I believe could be a few red flags in how not to get selected. I was granted the phone interview. The interviewer rang promptly at the allotted time. Straight off the mark, the woman started asking about my visa conditions as I am not an Australian citizen. Despite the fact that I have full working rights in the country and would be getting my Permanent Residency in a few months, she continued asking many questions to get reassurance. After that hurdle was jumped, she then moved on to questions asking why I was interested in Flight Centre. Naturally, I think everyone interested in this position would be so because of their passion for travel, which of course I highlighted along with my desire for a long-term career in travel and tourism. In not so many words, I was told this position was not really about travel but about sales!! Great. If I were after purely a sales role I would probably not focus my energy on retail travel sales as I would want to aim for higher pay opportunities. I think I mentally switched off after hearing that comment and just quickened the interview to an end and didn't bother asking any questions myself. Having only made it to the first stage, I can see why this company has such a high turnover and quite glad that I didn't have to waste any more of my time. I'll find a start to my travel and tourism career somewhere else.
