      Director Interview

      Jan 14, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at Freshworks in Nov 2019

      Interview

I interviewed for a brand director role after a lot of coaxing from a 3rd party recruiter. Remember, that I didn’t apply, they reached out to me. But before that some context. Hate to talk about myself but think required in this scenario. I have personally more social media followers then Freshworks, been a founding member of a funded startup, been working with industry bodies to mentor startups on digital marketing, have documented growth stories, and currently lead brand for a global organization that hires more people per year than the entire employee base of Freshworks. The only reason I agreed for the interview is the respect I have for Girish and what he’s built. Now coming to the interview process. The first level interview was conducted by the head of HR. We had a good discussion and it was a pleasant experience. To my surprise, the next level interview was scheduled with an HR manager instead of someone from Brand or Marketing. She rescheduled the interview twice and finally joined on a Zoom call but didn’t even turn on the camera. Puzzles me why do a Zoom call if you don’t want to use video! As the interview progressed, she asked about stuff like social media strategy etc. I don't think that she was the right person to conduct this interview as her own LinkedIn profile lacked basics like a profile picture. I also didn't find any other social media presence that qualifies her to conduct a technical interview. The process ended here with no further technical round. In the industry, when we hire even social media associates, the first few rounds consist of technical interviews and case studies. The HR gets involved in assessing cultural fit and compensation etc. on a later stage. Advice to Freshworks, you have every right to hire or not hire someone, but please don’t insult professionals by putting them through silly interviews. Putting a random post on Instagram is not a social media strategy. And a social media strategy can’t be explained to an HR manager over a phone call. Your talent brand is the most valuable asset you are going to have in the future, please do not tarnish it by putting people in charge of hiring who reinforces the HR stereotypes.

      Interview

It took two months total, starting with the recruiter and then two interviews with the team. There was a full month between each step. The interviewers seemed very disinterested. My impression was they were interviewing just to fill some sort of quota. Further, the interviewers were on the other side of the world so the times were late night for me. Finally, they didn't have the decency to send a personal email and instead sent the generic, system-generated rejection email. Overall it was a distasteful experience and a waste of my time.

Really slow process. Kept me waiting for weeks for an update. Wrong individuals interviewing me for the role. and the presentation I was asked to put together was the wrong context. The feedback at the end made no sense.

      Director Interview

      Jan 9, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Freshworks in Dec 2023

      Interview

The interview process was comprehensive but marked by delays between stages, affecting the overall experience. The process began with a recruiter screen, followed by an interview with the hiring manager. This was succeeded by two 1:1 meetings with functional leaders, culminating in a virtual onsite with two SVP leaders. The style of questions throughout was predominantly behavioral and leadership-focused, akin to the STAR method used at Amazon. Each stage of the interview was conducted professionally, with engaging and thought-provoking questions. However, the time taken to receive feedback or move to the next stage was notably protracted. After the final interview stage, I found myself needing to follow up twice, and it took approximately four weeks to receive any response. This extended period of silence and the necessity of initiating follow-ups were aspects of the process that could have been managed more efficiently and respectfully. Although the interviews themselves were well-structured, focusing on behavioral and leadership skills, there was a notable lack of functional questions directly related to the role's primary responsibilities. This imbalance in the questioning style meant that my relevant functional skills in these areas were not fully explored or demonstrated. The interview panel was all men, which did not reflect well on the diversity of the team. I would have appreciated being interviewed by at least one woman! In conclusion, while the interview process was methodical and the team was professional, the experience could be significantly enhanced with more timely communication, a balanced mix of behavioral and functional questions, and a more personalized approach to conveying final decisions. This would streamline the process and provide a more complete assessment of a candidate's fit for the role.
