      Business Operations Associate Interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Gigster (San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

Phone interview with hiring manager -> At home case study (1 week to complete) -> In person interviews (2 with various employees, 1 with hiring manager, 1 with CEO, 1 informal presentation of case study with CEO & hiring manager). The interview experience with Gigster was pretty poor. There seemed to be a lack of preparation and lack of respect for interviewee time on Gigster's end. The at home case study was very ambiguous / poorly worded and Gigster admittedly had not thought through their own approach to the case. While I recognize the purpose is to simply see how an interviewee approaches the case / data, the ambiguity and lack of thought put into the data provided meant that even if you chose a logical approach, the data / numbers / results could end up being non-sensical after working through everything. So it was basically a trial-and-error process of finding a logical approach that also resulted in logical results. This was frustrating and time consuming. Interviewers were hit and miss, some enjoyable to meet, while others seemed to treat the process as purely transactional. The CEO was particularly rude, though. During the case presentation he was on his phone rather than paying attention and when he did participate was clearly not interested in walking through the case. I understand that the CEO's time is more important than mine and he may be preoccupied / busy, but if that's the case then just don't have him be involved in the process, there are plenty of other people at the company that might have more interest in being involved. Even if I had been given an offer, this is not a person I would have been excited to bust-my-ass for, particularly in a start-up setting. Finally, I never received a formal response as to the outcome of the process despite reaching out.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Most questions pretty typical, e.g., how do deal with different types of problems, how do you approach different types of work, etc.? A few small case type questions. You should be prepared to do quick math problems on the fly.
