First you’ll participate in an online “interview” where you just record yourself answering questions and submit them. There’s a time limit for each question. Then from there you’ll asked to meet in person for an interview with the manager of the department you applied to. I was hired on the spot during the interview. Very casual, low pressure.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at H E B (Cypress, TX) in Jan 2017
Interview
I did the application and about 5 days later I got a call and did a brief phone interview. They asked basic questions like "What does it mean to be a good food service rep?" "Why do you want to work for HEB?" Etc. then I set up a group interview for that weekend. During the group interview it was about 10 of us sitting at a table in front of 3 panel judges from the different departments. We did 3 activities. The first one we had to get up, say our names and what we were applying for. Then we got into groups and picked 3 out of the 10 or so items they had on a table and we had to act as if we were trying to sell the items. Then we were given a card faced down and we could not turn it over until it was our turn to go. They were different scenarios and you had to quickly think of what you would do in your scenario. (The group interview was 30 minutes) We were then told that if we made it we would get a call by 5pm that day. I got a call back about an hour after for a second interview. In the second interview, she asked more traditional interview questions, I filled out my availability and signed for a background check and was told I'd get a call once the background check came back. Got called the next day for training to begin that weekend.
The key to this part of the interview is to be outgoing. If they ask for volunteers put your hand up first, even if you're nervous. It will make you stand out from everyone else. In the group activity, be the one to lead the group. Try to come up with the ideas while still incorporating and using your group members ideas as well.
