      Sales Associate Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at JCPenney in Jun 2013

      Interview

I applied online with a resume and filled out some personality profiling questions as well. I was interviewed on the phone about a week later. I passed the phone interview and was then invited to do a group interview with the company. There were about five other people in the group interview. The group interview consisted of questions about what we would do in specific situations that we might run into working retail, and it was also a test of how we worked in a group setting—we were given these blocks at one point and told to build a structure with them. They don't want you to just build the structure, they want to see how you interact with others. After the group interview, we were taken down onto the sales floor to conduct a mock sale with a hypothetical costumer (we all went to different areas of the store and the hiring manager gave us time to look around before she came to us and tested each of us separately). The hiring manager read off of a sheet of paper, explaining the customer's situation to me and then I was given time to try to fulfill the hypothetical customer's needs. She ended up accidentally revealing what I should be looking for because she read too far down the sheet but the situation was easy enough that I probably would have guessed what the customer wanted anyway. You're allowed to ask questions to the hypothetical customer and they give you feedback on how you did when you're done. I was told that I did a great job and both the hiring manager and the general manager for the department I was looking to work in seemed pleased with what I had done. I was called back in and offered the job about a week later.

      Interview

A JCPenney group interview for a sales associate position is designed to evaluate how candidates communicate, interact with others, and handle customer service situations. During the interview, applicants usually introduce themselves, answer questions about their experience, teamwork, and customer service skills, and may participate in a group activity or role-playing exercise. The interviewer observes how well each person listens, communicates, works with others, and demonstrates a positive attitude. Rather than focusing only on retail experience, JCPenney looks for candidates who are friendly, reliable, eager to help customers, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
