      Copywriter Interview

      Mar 2, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Lumos Labs (San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2015

      Interview

I received a call from their recruiter. We discussed my interest in the company and relevant work experience. At the end she asked if I would do a writing assignment. Normally I say no, because that's why I keep an extensive portfolio, to demonstrate my writing ability. But I like Lumosity, so I said yes. The assignment was to write an instructional presentation, a marketing email, and a blog-style summary of a very dense scientific paper. The instructions said to spend 4-5 hours on the assignment, which didn't seem sufficient. They provided a style guide which was fairly basic. The creative brief for the email was cursory. I completed the assignment and sent it back. The recruiter replied that she would forward it for review. A day later, I got an email saying my work was not acceptable and I would not be considered for the position. I asked for additional feedback and got none. I think if you're going to ask candidates to do unpaid spec work (in my case, in place of paying client work), you should be constructive in your feedback and more gracious in your communications with the candidate.

Thanks for writing this review. Our current copywriter only works 3 days a week and supports copy across multiple teams. While we try our best to get back to people in a timely manner with an answer and some feedback, sometimes mistakes like this happen. We have since made an even more concerted effort to give every single candidate feedback on their test.

      Interview

They did a phone interview and it was typical type of questions. They asked me to do a writing test. It had two prompts. One was write an email marketing to mothers on mothers day to buy their family a family plan. The other involved reading this pretty thick research paper and turn it into a blog that promoted Lumosity's scientific backing. They called a week later and said I did well. They gave me some feedback and asked me to revise to see how well I would respond to feedback and did so. Then I heard nothing back. Not even a no, we hate you. Not until several weeks later where they admitted they forgot about me and offered me a position. If you're going to ask someone to spend a significant amount of time writing a test, you should have courtesy to let them know what is happening, even if it's a we're interested but can't hire right at this moment. I already had a job at that point. The test took me a significant amount of time, and I already have a portfolio that is supposed to take the place for things like that. I might say no if they ask you to take a test because they might end up wasting your time.
