Since I interned at Deloitte over the summer a lot of the interview felt very conversational because it was very easy for me to establish rapport. Especially because I knew a lot of the Corporate Finance colleagues over in Sydney that my interviewers have had contact with. The content of the interviews felt very informal and I wasn’t asked many difficult questions. Most of them relate to my experiences over the summer in the audit division of Deloitte and there was (as expected) a very heavy focus on my motivations on applying to corporate finance, much so than any of the other interviews I had done before. I think this was because my interviewers had access to my feedback reports and were decently impressed, so instead they focused on my motivations. There was definitely quite a lot of chit chat during the interview that was related to nothing in particular, this is definitely related to my position rather than reflecting the interview style at Deloitte. Generally if you reach a state in the interviewers where the interviewer likes you and is satisfied with your performance they will steer the interview to this direction. But it is important to still use the appropriate (STAR) structure when responding to trivial questions, if you act too casual this can also be bad for you.
