      Product Director - Accessories Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Mohawk Industries (Calhoun, GA) in Apr 2022

      Interview

After spending 15 years growing a product line with significant crossover in the same commercial building industry I reached out to the recruiter for this position on LinkedIn. I was warned by colleagues in our industry to avoid Mohawk due to it's incredible dysfunction, but the fit seemed too perfect to pass up. The initial interview with the recruiter was good and left me encouraged. I then had a video interview with the hiring manager, Ruth Nelson, which also seemed to indicate good alignment. I offered to share details of my work product, processes I had developed, products I brought to market, etc., and she didn't have the time at that point. I was invited to on-site interviews at their headquarters in Georgia. I asked Lindsay, the recruiter, if I should prepare anything for the interview, and she told me that I didn't. I took time out of my schedule for travel (I was employed during the interview process) and arrived without a tool to show my work. I had 5 interviews and a lunch on the itinerary. The first interviews were with an HR rep and a quality manager. Neither of them asked a single question about myself, not even a "tell me about yourself" or "why are you interested in Mohawk." We had 45 minutes on the schedule and it was a vacuum that was mine to fill as neither of them drove the conversation at all. My interpretation of this is that my technical capabilities or product management vision were not under review but that these interviews were essentially a formality. After these interviews the hiring manager told me they weren't moving forward, and expressed disappointment that I didn't bring anything to show my work. They also perceived that I was too laid back, which was a fascinating interpretation of my demeanor, as I've never been considered laid back in my career. After additional research and interpretations of comments from the hiring manager, I believe that there are a few personalities at the top that are so dysfunctional that this dysfunction has been institutionalized to only hire people with similar characteristics without the realization that being horrible to work with isn't actually directly correlated with success in a business. You can be kind and still drive amazing growth. In addition to getting ousted midway through the itinerary, after nearly 5 months the company still hasn't reimbursed me for out-of-pocket travel expenses (gas for a rental car and food). I have sent several communications to the recruiter and been assured that I would be reimbursed, but there has been no reimbursement and no follow up communication since July 15 (it is now nearly September, and the interviews were in April). In my experience, which has been verified by people who have experience with the employees, this is a company with a toxic culture, bad players, and incredible dysfunction.
