I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Orlando, FL) in May 2016
Interview
Within 24 hours of submitting my application I was contacted via email to set up a time to come in and interview for an Internship position. He was very thorough with the building, designated parking areas, and how to check in (which I greatly appreciated since the area was all under construction). I did not find the interview questions to be challenging at all, but I did do lots of research on the company and the interview process before hand. I am not sure if the questions were easier for me because I have had several interviews in the past or because he asked more personal questions, one was even about my family ie. parents-what they did, siblings, etc.
I was offered the position a few days later but I declined because of the pay offer and nature of the internship. It seemed that they may use their interns for new business opportunities for insurance sales and that is NOT the area of finance I am studying. My interviewed confirmed that this is the only internship they offer and they accept students studying any area of finance. They also needed you to pay for your series 6 which they would reimburse you for after you passed.
Experience wise it was good, and I did have the chance to get another interview under my belt however, I was a little disappointed that they seemed to only be interested in having interns for the sake of having us bring in our own business. You get paid commission off the life insurance policies you sell but you have to market yourself and bring in your own business 100%. The schedule flexibility was very nice though, he mentioned that you can choose to work as little as 5 hours a week or work 40 if you wanted.
Interview questions [3]
Question 1
Tell me about your family, what your parents do, if you have any siblings.
Straightforward process, interviewed with them on campus. They provided the information I needed. I decided to not move ahead with the interview process as it did not align with my goals, but the interviewers were cordial and professional.
Felt like they were selling me something the whole time. Super easy to talk to, but something just felt off the whole time. Had multiple phases of them explaining why they're so perfect and great to work for (massive selection bias in some of their numbers)
