I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Columbus, OH) in Mar 2013
Interview
The interview process has three parts.
1. The first step is complete a personality test, which is later used to help you determine how the candidate works the best. It seems that this portion is used by the recruiter to gauge each candidates' initial interest.
2. Step two is to meet with the recruiter/internship coordinator, who will ask candidates a few questions to get to know them. Then, the candidate will be given two assignments, the first of which is to fill out a list of 50 people in your network (this is never given to the company, and always kept by the candidate). The second is to conduct 10 interviews with people the candidate knows well, the topic of which is to see how they think the candidate will fair in a financial representative position.
Again, the primary purpose of this assignment is to see if candidates will complete the task rather than to deeply analyze the results of the interview.
3. Step three is an interview with the candidate's potential mentor, who will check to see that the assignments from step 2 are completes, as well as asking some standard interview questions, which I will list below.
There were four or five interviews, if you count the meeting with my future mentor. There were also a few personality assessments. Lots of paperwork. The finance industry is tightly regulated.
The first interview was easygoing and went fairly well. We talked a little on myself and what northwestern was all about. Because they wanted to see how I could fit in to their team and what I would bring.
