      Financial Representative Interview

      Feb 11, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Troy, MI
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Troy, MI) in Jun 2015

      Interview

The interviewer was very energetic and eager to listen to what you had to say. She was also young and attractive. This isn't by accident. She is definitely more of a recruiter than anything. Her goal is to get in as many "qualified" candidates as possible. You aren't interviewing for a position or against other candidates, if they think you have half a brain for sales, they want you. I would guess that their turnover rate is high. It's basically an intern factory. I was excited to interview because it was one of my first shots at breaking into the financial job market. My friend highly recommended it and made it seem like it was the greatest place to work. The interview went great, it was a pleasant conversation, but by the end of it, I knew I wasn't coming back. You basically have to reach out to your friends and family and sell them insurance. The pay is $100/week stipend for training, otherwise its "eat what you kill". I tried to weigh the options and tell myself that if I put in the hours and worked hard it wouldn't be too bad. I asked if a transition later down the road was possible into something more along the lines of a financial analyst I was basically told no. That was basically when I realized that this just was't the place for me. She scheduled me for my second interview the next week but I never showed up. Fortunately the same day of my scheduled second interview with Northwestern i was called and told that I got the job as a financial analyst intern at a separate firm. I gave Northwestern a courtesy call and the interviewer was practically pleading that I come in for the second interview, she was very flattering but I had to respectfully decline and told her about the other position. I'm sure some people do very well at Northwestern and love what they do. If people have a knack for it, you can make some serious cash. Just be aware that it definitely a more of sales job than a finance job. They're looking for social, outgoing personality types that can meet clients face to face and sell them insurance more than anything. For some people thats a good thing and more power to you. P.S. A while later, while chatting with my coworkers, Northwestern came up and we turned out to all have similar experiences, including the same interviewer. We had a good chuckle about it.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked about your life and experiences. They want to know about the type of person you are more than what you've done. Looking for a confident, out going personality.

There were four or five interviews, if you count the meeting with my future mentor. There were also a few personality assessments. Lots of paperwork. The finance industry is tightly regulated.

The first interview was easygoing and went fairly well. We talked a little on myself and what northwestern was all about. Because they wanted to see how I could fit in to their team and what I would bring.
