Online application, HR phone call, design test, 2 aptitude tests, face to face interview (which was just another HR and aptitude test)
The initial HR call was fine, all the questions you would expect. Then I was asked to redesign a web page which I put about 12 hours of work into and paid for childcare so that I could do it well. I was called for a face to face interview on the back of this project, but the designer "couldn't make it" to the interview and the project or my process wasn't once mentioned or discussed. When I brought it up myself and asked for feedback or a discussion, I was told that the designer"must have been pleased" otherwise I wouldn't have been offered an interview, and that was that. The rest of the interview was 2 people who were not designers, repeating the same HR questions over and over for each role I've had in the past. These questions were on a sheet of paper and just repeated for every role.
It might be a process that makes sense for other roles, but I think Phorest's design interview process needs to be reviewed. They could have brought a product designer in to sit in on the interview, or rescheduled. When you ask a designer to do a project as part of your interview process, especially one that is aimed at improving your product, make sure to respect the work and time that they put in.
I didn't hear anything from Phorest after the interview. I knew leaving the office that I didn't want to work there, but I remained professional and polite. That feeling was solidified for me when I didn't even receive a rejection email thanking me for my time. Lots of improvements needed I feel!
