Long and tiresome process. Was initially given a very brief screening interview with the recruiter. She was thoughtful and went over the basics. (very broad overview of position, salary expectations, interview process, etc.)
The whole process was to be 3 separate interviews. (excluding the screening interview)
1. Screening interview <20 minutes
2. Informal interview with Sr. Hiring Manager ~30 minutes
3. 4, 30 minute interviews with the team & hiring decision maker
4. Final interview/presentation (didn't make it this far)
I then met with a Sr. Hiring Manager approximately a week after the -- this was another short 30 minute interview; fairly informal with your basic questions about experience, and canned interview questions.
I was then scheduled for the third, which was a lot more intense; 30 minutes each, with 4 different team members back to back. Typical questions about experience, what I would bring to the table, etc.
I felt the interviews all went well, although they really didn't vary too much from each other, a lot of repeat questions. No questions outside the job specifics which I felt odd. VERY talented group. (Everyone had very impressive resumes, master's or PhDs)
After roughly 4 hours total over 3 days, I received a ding letter a few hours later stating they went with someone else. My gut was that they were looking for someone local. (All the staff was located close to the SF offices and I have a hunch that was the biggest factor in their decision)
Granted this is speculation, but if that played a role I'm very disappointed they were not transparent about this. (The recruiter said that they were trying to get more people to embrace a hybrid work environment, but they were 'open' to remote; when every member was local, it should've been a red flag.)
