Interview
I had an initial call with a recruiter who was pleasant, conversational, and provided an organized and detailed overview of the company and process. After getting an on-the-spot yes from the recruiter, I scheduled time for an hour long conversation with an engineering manager where I was expecting standard behavioral "tell me about a time" type questions. The EM joined the call a few minutes late, food in mouth, and spent the first 45 minutes alternating between the standard substantive questions and fluffy, subjective "culture fit" type questions such as "what has guided your career decisions so far?", all the while drilling into details where it didn't seem very relevant to. The last 15 minutes were left open for my questions with which I tried to determine what the need on the team was and the types of work that were being done both of which were explained very ambiguously. I considered withdrawing from the process due to 1) the weird vibes from the EM and 2) the actual work sounding both ambiguous and boring. About a week after the call, I was notified that they wouldn't be moving forward. Based on the one team I was exposed to, it seemed very much like it was the EM's show where they are looking for a very particular type of engineer that suits their management style and are much less concerned with evaluating a candidate's qualifications.

Interview
Went through all rounds of interviews, which included a recruiter screening, hiring manager screening, and two coding interviews. The algorithms were not what I expected for this position, but in hindsight weren't too bad. I was offered feedback after my rejection, but the company did not follow through. This was truly disappointing considering their promised culture of feedback.
Talked to a recruiter for about 20 minutes about my background. Talked about the company for a little bit, and then asked me a few questions about my previous positions and a few "Tell me a time when..." questions. Tech stack lined up, but got a reject email a few days later.

Question 1
Tell me about a time where you messed up. Tell me how you fixed it.
I’m not sure what the whole process looks like. I ended up deciding that I needed the flexibility of post time/contract work, so I withdrew my name from consideration after recruiter screen. I think the next step would have been a hiring manager screen?
