The process started fine and I enjoyed talking to the recruiter and hiring manager. But I was then asked to complete an extensive unpaid "case study" to showcase my skills. I typically wouldn't question this type of project, but this assignment was for a real feature that the company had just rolled out. It felt like I had to trust the hiring team to not steal my work and even though their intentions could have been harmless, the whole thing felt kind of gross to me. I sent an email to remove myself as a candidate from the role, explaining my concerns and thought process, and never heard back.
