An employee from the marketing team contacted me to schedule a video call 1 week after my online application to discuss about my profile, experiences, the role, products, company culture, and so on. It was an open discussion that any applicant would enjoy. I had a second (quite similar) interview with someone else from the same team a few days later. During both interviews I had an opportunity to ask questions, challenge their strategy and I felt considered. They also challenged my skills, experiences & knowledge. At this stage everything was perfect except 2 mails I received on a Sunday (first one) and late at night (second one) : I was worried employees were disorganized or over loaded (which doesn't seem to be the case). 1 month after my application, SonarSource invited me to their office. They booked a trip to Geneva and a good hotel downtown for me. Everything was made to make me comfortable (they have a great Office Manager by the way). We started the D day with a presentation of where they come from, where they are now and where they want to go. I worked on two 30-minute exercises that we debriefed all together. Finally I joined the whole team for the weekly demo before lunch. After lunch I could ask a few more questions to the product marketing manager and I had a final interview with a recruiter and a "People & Culture" person which was great too : easy talk, good listeners, open discussion. It's the king of guys you want to spend the weekend with. I went back home right after this meeting. SonarSource called me today to wrap things up. I previously sent a mail to say thank you for this amazing experience and mention that I would not continue the hiring process. We debriefed quickly and came to the conclusion that we both felt the same way : I'm not the right profile for the role/team and this project would frustrate me on the long run. I liked : - flat management style - everybody is productive (hands on culture) - the whole hiring process (simple, thankful, effective) - open discussions with smart people - products and the fact that everyone buys it at SonarSource I didn't like : - 1 mail sent on a Sunday that gave me a bad impression (It's a tiny detail I agree) - I felt like the company culture is constantly in the air. It actually put some pressure on me like a corporation vibe (SonarSource is probably no more a startup..). I'm an entrepreneur so I guess this is not for me but I understood that most people love it there. To SonarSource team : Keep on considering candidates as you do. You rock. To candidates : Don't hesitate. Great opportunity to be part of something huge.
