      Content Strategist Interview

      Apr 4, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Study.com in Mar 2016

      Interview

The first step in study.com's interviewing process is a phone interview with HR. After applying online, I heard from her within two or three days and set up an interview for the following week. During the interview, the woman I spoke with was very pleasant, provided me with background information about study.com in general and the particular role I was applying for, and then asked me to describe myself. As she described the position, it itself was not exactly what I had been expecting from the description online, but she gave me multiple opportunities to ask questions and was very upfront and open about what I would be doing if I were to be hired.

      Question 1

What salary are you looking for? What do you think is your best quality? Why do you want to work for study.com? What attracted you to this particular position? Given the following list of tasks you would be doing while working here, please tell me if you would be (1) excited, (2) not excited, or (3) neutral about the task (tasks included things like copyediting, working with contractors, and prototyping).

I’m glad you found the phone call so informative. Our goal is to hire employees that are a good fit for the work and I’m glad you were able to learn that it wasn’t quite what you were looking for early in the process. We’ve since made changes to the job description that makes the work clearer from the beginning, so hopefully that helps. Even though it wasn’t a fit, we’re glad you enjoyed speaking with the team and hope you learned a bit more about Study.com. - Ashley

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Study.com (Mountain View, CA) in Sep 2018

      Interview

I had a wonderful experience with my recruiter throughout the interview process. She was professional, genuine, and really seemed to care about the candidate experience. I especially appreciated her transparency and responsiveness. However, the actual onsite where I met with members of the content team was disappointing. While I liked the format of doing activities/skills exercises with interviewers (I got a glimpse of what day-to-day work would be like), the tone of the interviews seemed off. My interviewers ranged from disinterested (e.g. interrupting my answers) to hostile (e.g. “I know the team at your previous company was laid off. Did you only take your current job because you needed a job?”). Many questions were repetitive, and there was a lot of focus around working with a team and culture fit, rather than qualifications to do the job itself. There was a lot of rigidity around process and a general lack of joy that I found strange for an edtech company. Personally, Study didn’t feel like a place that valued diversity of backgrounds or opinions.

      Content Strategist Interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Study.com (San Jose, CA) in Jan 2016

      Interview

The interview process involved three phases, including a(n) 1) in-depth HR interview 2) practical skills department interview 3) in-person interview (did not reach this point) In the first phase, HR provided information on the company's past and present, and really tried to give me an idea of what the team does. She also asked my salary requirements/requests. The second phase required applicants to demonstrate writing and communication skills through a couple of simple exercises (making suggestions to a contracted writer and providing instructions for how to write lesson descriptions/blurbs). While on the phone, we did a screenshare and I demonstrated how I would go about a task the Content Strategists encounter often (simple research). I actually had a very difficult time hearing the interviewer (was on speaker the entire time) and felt like she was trying to get specific answers out of me (that would help their company in its present state), rather than really learn what I had to offer the company.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

In the HR interview, they asked me if I knew of direct competitors with Study.com.

Thank you for detailing the interview process. I'm sure that will be very helpful to future applicants. On the phone call we try to learn about candidates skills in order to make sure they are a fit for the job duties. We also try to learn what candidates can offer the company but maybe we didn't save enough time for that on your interview. I will look into the issue you pointed out about the audio quality on the phone - thank you for mentioning it.
