I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Teck Resources Limited (Vancouver, BC) in Oct 2020
Interview
I had 4 interviews over 3 weeks. 1) Screener with the recruiter. 2) Technical interview with the hiring manager. 3) Panel interview with two UX designers and a PO. 4) Behavioural and leadership interview with an HR advisor.
I rated the overall experience as neutral because there were both pros and cons.
Pros:
- The recruiter said at the outset that they wanted to provide a top-notch recruitment experience and get back to me within 24-48 hours, and they did so after every stage of the process.
- I received positive feedback from the hiring manager during the interview and he even offered to answer additional questions I had after our interview.
- They shared the results of my Prevue assessment with me, which I thought was a nice touch.
Cons:
- I was asked in my first interview how much I earned at my last job. When I refused to answer and only shared my desired salary, the recruiter tried to push further and ask what my threshold was for walking away. I was also asked if I was single/married/had dependants for the purpose of the benefits package, so they could expedite the contract should an offer be made. IMO both are inappropriate to ask, and the latter should only be asked _after_ the offer is accepted.
- In the one-hour panel interview, I was only given 7 mins at the end to ask my questions. I didn't feel that was enough time to get to know the team better.
- After the last round, the recruiter sent me a generic email informing that the team went with another candidate. When I asked if they could share any actionable feedback that I could take forward in my job search, I heard no response. I later learned that they aren't able to share specifics around the hiring decision. I'm not surprised to hear that, but my recommendation to a company who wants to provide a top-notch recruitment experience is to find a way to provide that feedback. That's the last impression you're leaving on the candidates.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
How would you approach the first 30 days to make it successful?
Tell us about a time you did user research or testing, walk us through your process.
What kind of workplace do you find irritable?
The interview process is rigorous and lengthy. The company makes sure the right candidate is chosen. Even though there are multiple steps to the interview process, they are in quick succession.
