This is for the Press Internship position on Capitol Hill for a US Senator representing the Northeastern region of the US. I was interviewed by telephone with the press assistant who was a recent and previous press intern one year ago who claims they got a full-time job on Capitol Hill based on “getting lucky” and have no desire for a career in politics. The position is based in a mailroom where press interns are obtaining press clips of this senator, researching and monitoring media news about the senator, and speaking to reporters and officials inquiring about the senator. Interns are expected to work from home in the morning starting from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM, sending out emails, and interns will also have to work at the Senate office from either 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM or 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Then, interns have work from home in the evening from when you arrive home until your bedtime. And, it is the same thing all over again. Most of the interns for this role are older than regular college students. This internship position is a very burn-out position that requires someone to think on their feet and work as a team. The commitment of this internship position is for three months maximum. It is simply boring, repetitive, and mundane tasks. The real con of this internship position is that it is unpaid. The senator is not paying the interns. For, out-of-state intern applicants who have no ties whatsoever to the state of where the senator hails from or does not attend an accredited academic institution in the state where the senator hails from, out-of-state intern applicants cannot apply for the stipend application with this particular senator as it is only applicants actually from the senator's home state and applicants who attend an academic institution in the senator's home state. If you are an out-of-state intern looking for an internship whether it is press, communications, legislative, political, public policy, or anything else, this internship position, the internship program, and all other positions, and this senator is not for you as this internship is an unpaid internship. This internship may or may not lead you to another job or another internship opportunity. This is not for journalism students nor journalism graduates at all. This senator needs to truly financially pay its interns and pay them what they are actually worth. Interns do most of the work in the office for press and communication department. This senator’s press and communications department on Capitol Hill has their hands full. The senator has been publicly called out in recent years by organizations and other senators for not paying their interns. It doesn't matter if they are running to be the next commander-in-chief of the United States or not, this senator genuinely does not care about you at all. Find another senator or representative that genuinely and truly financially pays their interns regardless of the US state where the intern applicant is from and /or resides in and the university that intern applicant currently attends or have recently or previously matriculated from or graduated from. This internship is unpaid and is truly not worth it at all. Find and apply for a paid internship opportunity somewhere else!
