      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Varsity Tutors in Sep 2015

      Interview

I filled out an online questionnaire and was immediately emailed with an invitation to a phone interview. The phone interview was fairly brief; the questions basically focused on which subjects I'd like to tutor, my availability and my willingness to travel. I felt the phone interview was rushed. At the end, I was invited to schedule an online interview. Between the phone interview and online interview I also had to take 4 assessment tests related to the subjects I hoped to tutor. The online interview used Varsity Tutor's online platform, which helps prepare prospective tutors for using the platform for tutoring. My interviewer was knowledgeable and engaging. Since I was applying to be an English/reading/writing tutor, she asked me how I would guide an 8th-grade student through the process of writing a five-paragraph persuasive paper. At the end of the interview I was offered the job, and the interviewer walked me through Varsity Tutor's independent contractor agreement. She said I could sign it then or wait and sign it within 24 hours; I spent some time after the interview reviewing the contract and signed it that evening.

Interview on video of you teaching something, everything else was back and forth emails or online questions, you perform a profile for yourself. I think it's all very straight forward. If you want to sub-contract, its pretty self explanatory.
