I was approached by Sue, a member of the recruiting team, late last year. The process stalled with the unfortunate passing of Paul Allen, but we reconnected in 2019 when the role was posted again. After reconnecting, there were these steps (note that my loop was irregular to adjust for people being out of the office):
1. Sue and I met 1:1 to discuss my background, the role, and Vulcan as a whole. The focus on "why Vulcan" is a recurring theme, the team genuinely cares about why people wish to join the company.
2. A meeting with 4 members of the HR and the recruiting team. These are all 1:1 discussions, 30 minutes each. Vulcan values a close, collaborative partnership between recruiting and HR, so this is a chance to connect and engage with key stakeholders.
3. Two separate 1:1s, one with the head of technology and the other with the head of HR. This was to dig into your potential as a recruiting partner and leader, while also investigating your interest in Vulcan from an executive perspective.
4. Final meeting with the head of recruiting, this conversation took a bit over an hour.
A few factors made this an impressive, pleasant experience:
1. Sue was an exceptional guide, her attention to detail is impeccable. She provided valuable feedback and briefings, checking in at each stage of the process with clear expectations for what's next.
2. The coordination efforts were quick and efficient, this made the experience much lower stress than other interview loops.
3. Transparency! I developed a clear understanding of the role, of where Vulcan stands as a company, and how I would work with each person that interviewed me.
