Over 70 years ago, Danny Thomas was a young entertainer with a baby on the way. Work wasn't easy to come by, and his despair grew. He turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, and vowed, "Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine." His shrine would become St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Today, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a global leader in the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases of childhood. St. Jude is recognized as one of the world’s premier pediatric research and treatment institutions with a focus on acute lymphoblastic leukemia, brain tumors and infectious diseases. Research and treatments developed at St. Jude are shared to help improve the survival rate for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases worldwide.

Headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. This year, we introduced the FY22-27 St. Jude Strategic Plan that sets the course for how we continue to accelerate progress in the lab, in the clinic and around the world—and ensure this proud legacy remains for generations to follow. We continue to pose an intriguing challenge to each other: "If not St. Jude, then who?" The new Strategic Plan is a $12.9 billion commitment that supports 2,300 additional jobs, provides $2.3 billion in new construction and capital needs, and opens new areas of research.

But that's just the start.

We're recommitting to a focus on fundamental science by advancing our laboratory-based research efforts to drive new discoveries that accelerate the ability to advance cures.

We're seeking to advance cures for children with nonmalignant hematological diseases, including sickle cell disease, coagulation disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes.

We're aiming to improve cure rates for pediatric cancer and catastrophic blood diseases worldwide through St. Jude Global and the Global Alliance.

We're continuing our standard for patient care and the experience our patients and their families have during the treatment journey.

About Memphis and the Mid-South

Approximately 6,000 faculty, postdoctoral research associates and staff reside in the Memphis metropolitan area, a region which includes western Tennessee, northern Mississippi and eastern Arkansas. A sprawling city of 650,000 people, Memphis is the home of the blues and the birthplace of rock and roll. St Jude’s 110-acre campus is nestled in the medical district of downtown Memphis, close to the bluffs of the Mississippi River and just minutes from the river island community of Harbor Town that many St Jude employees call home.

Andrew Kleist, MD, PhD, has been named a 2025 STAT Wunderkind, an honor given by STAT, a leading health and life sciences publication, to early-career researchers advancing biomedical science. Kleist is a lead computational research scientist at the Center of Excellence for Data Driven Discovery at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Mentored by M. Madan Babu, PhD, FRS, his research explores molecular-scale biological events that control cell movement and migration. Kleist expressed gratitude for the recognition and the mentorship that shaped his career. His current studies include the impact of mutations in influenza proteins on pathogenicity, aberrant signaling in cancer progression, and how genetic variants influence protein structures and human disease.
