The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is the largest state public power organization in the U.S., founded in 1931 with the mission to harness the State’s natural resources to provide reliable power at a low cost. NYPA generates nearly a quarter of New York State’s electricity and operates one‑third of its transmission lines. More than 80 percent of NYPA’s power comes from clean, emissions‑free hydropower, supporting the state’s progress toward a sustainable energy future. As a public entity governed by New York State rather than private investors, NYPA exists to advance the public interest and is primarily self‑funded through the sale of the electricity it produces—not taxpayer dollars. Its operations span electricity generation and storage, statewide transmission, customer services and partnerships, and oversight of the New York State Canal Corporation as a subsidiary. NYPA’s diverse customer base includes businesses, non‑profits, government facilities, and local municipal utilities across the state.
