Pros

You learn everything about framing, sheathing, doors/windows, roofing, garages, pole barns, blueprints, etc. The knowledge is on a college level. Even business training is relatively high.

Cons

There seems to not be enough intelligence in the higher levels of management, almost none of them even have college degrees. For such an elite market and awesome position to be a company, why run it with as much intelligence as possible?

Highly energetic environment, focus on learning and education of MT's.

Cons

Institutionalized abusive employment practices. Long hours, unpaid if they can get away with it, high stress, frequent unsafe practices.

Pros

Get to learn a lot about building materials, blueprint takeoffs, and sales with their training program. Potential to make decent money with no education if you climb the ladder and are not afraid to relocate to different locations.

Cons

48 hour work week, minimum. Typically would have to work every other Saturday and would be off a day through the week, but this was not guaranteed. Low pay, 9.42/hr with no raises, only bonuses. The only way to receive a raise is to move up into management, which requires relocating, or to sale more. Bonuses are based on sales, however the goals are near impossible to reach especially if you are in a store that does not get much traffic. Management is terrible. All upper management began with the manager trainee position, and most have very little formal education pertaining to management or business except the training they received at 84 Lumber. As a result, managers typically have the my way or the highway military management style where they yell and boss you around and tell you its just part of the job. The Stores are very outdated and look run down and do not appeal to customers such as homeowners or DIYers. There is not enough staff on hand or time in the day ever to clean up around the store, meaning clean up gets done about once a week or two. Working conditions are horrible. You are constantly in and out of the store which has very little heat and A/C. All equipment including computers, tools, forklifts, etc. are vastly outdated and in serious need for replacement. You are constantly dealing with faulty equipment.
