ABB Can be a Good Company Depending on Location

Pros

ABB has good benefits and offers education assistance and stock options. If you are in the right LBU, the management care about their employees needs and advancement and career development. The right LBU has a great culture that is very open and welcoming.

Cons

Management at ABB has no decision making authority. Every decision must go to Zurich for approval before it can be implemented. If you work for ABB in the "wrong" location, management is very closed off. They do not care about their employees and treat them as if they are just disposable commodities. They do not care about what the employee can bring to the company - they only care about the bottom line, saving money and getting their big bonuses.

Pros

Good pay, decent benefits, some great colleagues to share the pain with.

Cons

Unless you are in Zurich (global HQ), you are considered a second-class employee. Everyone in Zurich thinks they are the best at their job, which simply isn't true. This carries up to the organization, where global hq can tell the regions what to do, and what not to do. As a result, US employees, for example, are mostly order-takers from people who know less about a strategy than they do. Except for the US CEO, upper management is unwilling to challenge anybody that the US has a better vision and strategy of where to take the company. The global CEO has no vision yet micromanages his leadership team to ensure no one else gets to challenge him. He is not customer-focused, just buzzword-focused.

Pros

Compensation, relocation and medical are average or above but can vary on drastically. When the company is doing poorly, you will notice changes and sometimes be warned ahead of time to layoffs.

Cons

Poor vision in senior management. Driven by a quick fix rule of thumb mentality that causes frequent resurfacing of quality and design issues. Horrific documentation and standard procedures that fall behind 1940’s standards. Most situations involve quality of material and design from poor communication. Although the issues are simple it is often an over clogged funnel of marbles that chokes out the bunch so not even one can be successful.
