Pros

I've been working for AECOM for over 10 years. The first 6 were good. Managers were supportive and you felt appreciated. I have to say that the people I work with are great and it's the one thing keeping me at AECOM. More recently the amount of additional annual leave you can 'buy back' has been increased meaning that you could potentially take 35 days a year + public holidays. The people at the very top of the company have the right ideas and attitudes.

Cons

In the last 3 years the management culture of AECOM UK is to tell employees what the want to hear, rather than the truth. Don't expect any career development / progression unless you go out drinking and watching sports with the right managers - if you don't fit in to the 'gang' your will be made to feel like an outsider. Everything is blamed on the economy and you are told there will be no promotions each year and this then turns out not to be the case. The appraisal system has changed and is worthless. You will be lucky if you get any feedback - positive or negative in your annual appraisal. Interim appraisals are generally avoided by managers if they can help it so that they can avoid having to help you achieve your development objectives.

Pros

As so many have pointed out, the people who actually are conducting engineering and other professional services are some of the best and brightest I have ever met. We work on some great projects that really make an impact on the world's built, natural, and social environments and have been lucky to work with many great partners and clients.

Cons

Despite a Vision for 2020 built upon the pillars of People, Innovation, Excellence, and Growth, there has been no clear strategy or metrics set that define those goals and works to acheive some semblance of the stated Vision. Management appears reactionary to the external pressures of the stock market making cuts to important business support functions as well as within technical areas while the ranks of those conducting the "business of the business" are bloated and overpaid offering no perceived value to the organization. Continued pressure for utilization has actually limited ability for professional growth by making it difficult to get needed training or on the job experience if it is not directly billable and has resulted in disengagement so many of the company's best people. The size and beaurocracy results in severe lack of agility, limits the ability to innovate, and deters the expansion of best practices developed on local levels to the wider operations.
