Pros
Management buys employees snacks once a month
Cons
Unfortunately, this job is not what it's cracked up to be. When one is hired, they are promised growth. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. The management style is completely laissez-faire. Management is often unreachable for hours on end, leaving the employees in customer service roles to fend for themselves when it comes to difficult questions. Customer service employees are directed to inform any customer asking for management that they are "in a meeting and will call back later." The latter part of this statement often does not occur. Customers must resort to physically driving to the office to speak with management since they are unable to receive a call back. Any form of "negativity" is punishable in the form of immediate termination. Management is a big fan of making racist/sexist/homophobic jokes. Anti-semitism runs deep in this company as well. Although there are people who directly work for the company who do identify as Jewish, non-straight, and non-white people, the owners have no shame publicly poking fun at members of these communities. Paychecks may be held at any given time unless you profess thankfulness for subpar leadership. Human feces often appear in the parking lot due to improper plumbing, creating a sewage backup right outside the front door. The heat is not turned on unless it is below 32F, and the A/C often stops working in the middle of the Houston August summertime. The refinishing warehouse does not have ventilation for the toxic fumes and paint thinner-soaked rags are thrown anywhere and everywhere. Saddest of all, there is no development or growth possible in the company due to the structure of management. The Operations Manager holds all power in deciding what someone is doing at any given point in time. Promotions (without raises) and demotions are completely random. Promises of management positions are also thrown into the conversation for several employees with no follow through. Starting pay is $10.00/hour and you can work your way up to $12.00/hour with years of unappreciated hard work. Five paid vacation days are available per year after the first year (but not to be used without 4 weeks notice and approval by every member of management). No healthcare benefits are available and there is no paid sick or maternity leave. The turnover rate is exceptionally high due to conflicting personalities with management. COVID-19 is being handled extremely irresponsibly. When the local government stated that all nonessential businesses are shut down until further notice, AHM responded by telling their employees that "Furniture doesn't sleep" and they were instructed to park in the hidden back parking lot as to not be seen and the front gates were locked to appear as if they were following guidelines. AHM proceeded to assure their employees that were covered as an essential business by finding loopholes and wording ambiguity in the stay at home order. Although all office jobs are completely able to be done remotely (all work done on laptops and desk phones with forwarding abilities), AHM decided to risk the health and safety of each employee daily by requiring them to physically come into the office. The owners of the company reinforced multiple times that this deadly virus is comparable to the flu (also calling the "Kung Flu" and the "China Virus") and discouraged wearing masks, as these are seen as infringements on their constitutional rights. Masks are viewed as "Sheep-ism" (quoted from one of the owners). There are still currently no opportunities to work from home, after several employees have lost loved ones. The nepotism here is also a large deterrence. Almost half of the employees are related in some fashion to the owners/OM. These employees are allowed free passes and many more opportunities than those who are not related. Unwanted sexual comments and advancements towards other employees are brushed off when coming from these related employees. Fathers, daughters, brothers, sisters, and family friends are invincible. All in all, this is not a company for anyone looking to stick around more than a few months.
