Poor Work / Life Balance

Pros

Being employed. Gym on site.

Cons

It was hard to have a life outside of work while here. I worked long hours, and like some of the other reviews stated, did not get paid for many of the hours I put in, but this position seemed like 2 roles mashed up into one so 40 hours+ was required. The company culture is very corporate, very official and maybe a little too structured and blue-suit like. If you read the official responses to the negative reviews, you can get a feel for how the company speaks, somewhat impersonal and canned.

Pros

AMN had, when I was there for eight years, a small company feel. Everyone pulling together however as in many companies sales rules the day and the prima donnas made life hell for support and operations. That started to change with some new leadership. Most of the great recruiters are gone.

Cons

It's very political. Leaders with poor leadership skills are allowed to continue with few exceptions. The bottom line is the key to being successful at AMN. If you contribute either through selling or reducing costs you are a star. Even these folks can be cast out in favor of the bottom line.

Pros

It's a job. If you need a job, well, I guess there are worse ones. An Indonesian clothing sweatshop located in a decrepit, hazardous building without air conditioning would be worse I guess.

Cons

This company is top heavy. And the top gets paid pretty darn well (pres. - 1mm+, veeps-300k+) , while the middle and bottom is not allowed to go over 40 hours per week time-punch, even though there is no way these job could be done in just 40 hours per week. This company keeps the worker bee pool very lean, so a lot of responsibility is assinged to one person... so long long hours are the norm. But you cannot go over your 40 hours per week on the time card, so you have to fudge your time card or get a talking to. Oh, but you can leave an hour early on Fridays to make up for the extra 10 hours you put in for the week. Plus, every corporate buzzword that ever existed is routinely spouted about in meetings. Yes, here you can hear your Vice Presidents talk for an hour but never say anything. It's awesome. Corporate Buzzword Bingo is alive and well at AMN department meetings. Turnover is increasing. The company is heading toward hiring contractors only, and these poor shmucks get the shortest end of the stick. No benefits, long hours, and low pay. Plus, they do not treat mothers coming back from maternity leave well. You will either get demoted (not illegal, because, well, they at least didn't fire you), or will cut your responsibilities to the point where you are no longer needed, and then lay you off. This happened to one woman about 5 months after she returned. It was a deliberate, systematic railroading and she was a good, solid worker. The company is really doing all it can to kill morale. They are doing a great job at this.
