Pros

On low volume days, it's a pretty fun job. You have a good amount of freedom to do whatever you want. I had a lot of time to work on homework for medic school. Patients are usually nice and grateful for your work. Supervisors are seeming to move people to ambulance positions fairly quickly (after about 6 months).

Cons

You're making peanuts. Unless you pick up overtime, you won't be making a lot of money. They recently decided that even if you move onto a truck (if you're an EMT) you will not be getting a raise. Benefits are absolutely terrible, I may as well not have insurance at all. Despite my frequent doctor appointments, I will never reach my deductible unless something serious happens. High volume days can be very stressful, I've had days where I was unable to eat most of the day, however that is EMS life, not the fault of AMR.
