Long busy shifts with little chance of getting out on time.

Pros

The pay and personal time off available at American Medical Response is good for the area and you get a decent amount of time off.

Cons

Be prepared to feel like an owned resource. Your time is not your own if your scheduled to get out at 5pm you probably won't get out till at least 5:30 and probably even later. Be prepared to be ordered in if your full time and work extra shifts with little to no notice.

Many up's and down's with senior management

Pros

Many employees at the ground level are great people You have the ability to see some great cases due to the coverage areas.

Cons

Senior management has no experience in managing employees. Contracts aren't always upheld (i.e. you can get held 1+ hrs while many cars are posting, etc.) Employees are often written up at the drop of a dime for no apparent reason with no counseling Supervisors typically don't have their employee's backs when push comes to shove.

To gain just enough experince to get hired at another provider

Cons

Never have enough staff, so you are always working on your call days. If you are not working at least 6 shifts per week the supervisors are talking down to you and forcing you to work at least this much or it could be your job. Due to the very shallow employee pool I had either a student or a new hire almost every single day. Then when you and your partner refuse to release a new hire because they are a danger to themselves and you, the supervisor runs one call with them, and releases them.
