Bizarre working culture

Pros

Interesting business, decent compensation and benefits.

Cons

Weird cult of personality around founder/owner. Siloed management and working culture where sycophancy trumps competency and professionalism. A small-town company that still hasn't grown up.

We are sorry your experience with us wasn't positive. While we work hard to make APMEX a great place to work, we realize our fast-pace and strategy adjustments required to respond to the marketplace aren't for everyone. As the company has grown quickly, we've worked to enhance our culture so every employee has a positive experience. If you have specific advice to management, I invite you to send your comments to me personally at apmexhotline@apmex.com. Thank you.

Dysfunctional Leadership

Pros

Most folks at the junior levels are good people who take pride in their work, work hard, and treat their peers with professionalism and respect.

Cons

During my tenure there were other new team members who were passionate, smart, accomplished and dedicated employees -- ranging from the manager level all the way to the C-suite. Unfortunately, almost all of those people are gone. What is left is a dysfunctional and ill-equiped leadership team that lacks vision and focus, and that distrusts and disempowers its employees.

Too Big, Too Fast

Pros

Free deli-style lunch is provided every day at both locations. Various bonus programs dependent upon profitability. Company has strong customer relationship values. Tremendous growth in short period of time. Continuing education opportunities paid for if for the interest of the company. Paid holidays.

Cons

The company is trying to define the culture they want to be but in doing so have many times stated, "This is how it is. If you don't like it - leave. We don't want you if you won't get on board." Senior Management lacks personal relational skills and does not obtain the respect they no doubt have earned but rather people fear them instead. Often times people just say, "Yes, sir" instead of discussing things because they are not perceived as good listeners. The company has defined its values and they are good ones. However, these values are only related to the customer experience. Concierge service has been communicated as such for the customer, but not for the employee. Don't expect compliments from any member of management without them being back-handed with criticism. Volatile market typically creates many mandatory overtime hours in operations. In operations, don't count on having every paid holiday off.

Thank you for your input regarding feedback. It's important to make sure everyone gets praise as well as feedback about areas where they can improve. We recently started Concierge Customer Service for Internal Customers training, which we hope will help everyone treat each other as well as we do the customers.
