Why not to work for AT&T

Pros

Large company that has different work locations.

Cons

If you try to work you way up from within you will never make any money. Limit of 5% pay increase per promotion. There are very limited opportunities to advance and at that, most promotions are based on the "good old boy" rule. People are not hired or promoted for their experience but rather who they know and who they are friends with.

Pros

The size of the technical organization allows one to "hide" ... individuals that need to retire or should retireare being allowed to stay "in position" influencing current business activities and future corporate activities.

Cons

Office politics, poor training opportunities, "off-site" management structure would work if the sub-cultures were blended correctly. SBC, AT&T, BellSouth, Cingular, PacBell, SNET, these subcultures still exist years after merger activities occurred. It makes for very poor communications. As technical processes are merged positions in the technical areas of the corporation are becoming fewer and fewer. "Downsizing" fears have middle management paralyzed.
