Pros

Lots of professional development focused on clear action steps to implement the next week. Coaches set differentiated goals and coach teachers often. It is not unusual to get coached daily. There are multiple layers of support. Behavior support team are responsive and proactive. They work daily with teachers to create plans to help our kids we love the most succeed in class and develop a love of learning. There is a lot of time during the day to prepare so teachers don't need to stay late. Teachers in Residence (TIRs) do some of the more time consuming tasks, such as making copies and tracking homework, so that teachers can spend their time intellectually preparing for lessons and responding to student work.

Cons

At first the extensive feedback can feel overwhelming. However, it all comes from a growth mindset and it is all given with the intent to improve and be better for the kids. Sometimes the high level of structure can feel overwhelming.

Achievement First Response

Thanks for sharing this positive feedback. It’s always great to hear that the systems we put in place around both student culture and academics are having the intended effects. I also appreciate you naming the high level of feedback you’re receiving at Achievement First – it can definitely be overwhelming in the beginning! But like you said, we really believe that a ton of feedback for teachers will lead to enormous gains in student achievement. Thanks again for dropping us a review and have a great rest of the school year! -Tom Kaiser, Chief Talent Officer

Pros

Achievement First provides great training and professional development for new teachers. After teaching at Achievement First for a few years, you will be in a position to excel in another school environment that might be more sustainable.

Cons

The workload and the number of hours you will have to put in your first year especially are significant. The leadership turns over quite often, which can be frustrating repeatedly bringing a new leadership team up to speed.

Pros

Achievement First believes that good culture and support at the staff level is a great foundation for student achievement. All employees work very hard to create a friendly, positive culture. In addition, AF truly wants to see everyone on the team succeed and the team will bend over backwards to try to help if you need growth in any area.

Cons

Work/life balance is difficult, so anyone getting into this really has to believe in their heart that it's for the children. However, AF does its best to help foster a supportive environment. For example, they plan social events, provide resources to learn how to stay organized, and recently began offering a free subscription for a meditation app.
