Pros

-Children are amazing and families are so supportive. -Robust, individualized coaching and feedback for teachers -Learn a lot of transferable skills that can help you in other settings -Competitive salary for first year teachers (comparable to other charter schools in the area)

Cons

-Rigid behavior management expectations for the children and not always developmentally appropriate (high emphasis on body control) -Teachers graded very harshly whether kids are "on task" based on the rigid set of expectations set forth by the administration and network as a whole -Much of the curriculum and lesson plans are outdated so teachers constantly have to modify them to be more age appropriate and relevant for the scholars we serve. -Feels like a very cliquey and toxic workplace environment

Pros

The kiddos are by far the best part of the job. They're great, though many of them struggle with significant behavioral challenges.

Cons

Because of the network-mandated techniques for use in the classroom, teachers have little autonomy over their classrooms. The workload is far too intense to maintain staff--the turnover rate is shocking and does active harm to students. AF functions on a burnout model, hiring young, idealistic teachers who can't stick it out for more than a few years just so they can hire more teachers of the same type. Most teachers leave AF never to teach again because they think that the drill-sargeant, racist "coaching" techniques at this school and maltreatment of the staff is true of teaching everywhere. I would not recommend a job at AF to anyone.

I am so sorry to read that this was your experience - it is so far from what we want for any of our teachers at any of our schools. We do have consistent practices from classroom to classroom to support teachers by limiting the time needed to lesson plan, and to make sure our kids have a safe, excellent and unified experience. AND we want and need our teachers to bring their own skills and voice to their lessons. We greatly value staff professional development, and we invest in the coaching of all of our people whether they are new, or they have been with us for a year, or 10 years, or more. Leading For Racial Equity is one of our vital core values -- if you have specific feedback about how your coaching experience missed the mark here, please share it with me at tomkaiser@achievementfirst.org so that we can look into it and take action.
