Pros

I started at AF after several years teaching at a smaller charter school. The expectations for kids & as a result adults are very high. I grew more in my first year of teaching @ AF than all other years combined.

Cons

We're trying to transform public school education and that takes a lot of work. You will *feel* unsuccessful at times, and it is important that you actively seek out support and perspective from colleagues and administration.

Pros

Some high-quality coaching and the opportunity to work with dedicated and passionate colleagues.

Cons

Where to start? The behavioral management system was an outdated and emotionally damaging 'broken windows' system where even the smallest of behaviors - posture, eye contact, etc - was policed. Underexperienced staff rose to leadership positions and were constantly 're-inventing' curriculum and imposing it on classroom teachers. Work-life balance was non-existent - some grade level meetings started at 6:00 in the morning. There were documented incidents of administrative staff emotionally and even physically abusing students. I started off my career as an educator there and, looking back, cannot overstate how damaging their approach to education and emotional-social wellbeing is, for both staff and students.
