Pros

The kids are wonderful and sweet.

Cons

The school misleads its staff when they first come that they are an equity is priority yet they use employees of color as tokens and provide curriculum that does not properly serve its students. They police students bodies, don’t respect their culture. Spanish speaking students and families receive no support but the school dresses up this lack really nice. Management is all white ( unless it’s the Dean of culture aka disciplinary role) with no real experience witching with students of color yet make decisions for them without understanding circumstances in communities of color. School hires incompetent Management who have no real experience in education and educating student of color.

I am so sorry to hear about your negative experience of AF. This was incredibly difficult to read. Leading For Racial Equity is one of our core values as an organization and it is something we infuse in all that we do, from our hiring and training processes to the way we craft our approach and our curriculum. We have made a series of new Leading for Equity commitments, which have included the naming of our first Chief Equity Officer, and many programmatic changes. (They are described here: https://www.achievementfirst.org/our-lead-for-racial-equity-commitments/.) We work hard to serve our English learners, to ensure racial diversity in all management roles, and to create learning spaces in which every child feels that they are known, loved and learning. If you’d like to further discuss your experience, please email me at TaliaShaull@achievementfirst.org - what you experienced is far from we’d want for any student or staff member at our schools.

Pros

AF has competitive salaries and is an amazingly well-resourced school network. It's nice to work at a company where it's easy to pay for all the supplies/materials you could want.

Cons

AF has shied away from using language like no excuses in recent years, but the philosophy of the network is still a very controlling and punitive one for children. I would never send my own child to one of our schools.
