Pros

If you want to get better at teaching, come work at Achievement First. Here, you will find many people willing to help you get better. From firsthand experience as a new teacher to a now more experienced teacher, I have grown tremendously due to my colleagues' investment in my development. Some assume it takes a really long time to become a great teacher, but at AF we believe growth can happen when a teammate has the support and the personal commitment to improve. As a network, we excel in our growth mindset, and we are committed to getting better because we know it directly impacts our students' and families' lives. We model this mindset for our students every day.

Cons

Sustainability continues to be a challenge, but it's being taken more seriously because retaining talented teachers is necessary to building strong schools. Because AF is committed to doing what works, this increases the need to shift curriculum to meet our stated goals. This leads to more time devoted to planning, which increases the likelihood of burnout.

Pros

In the three years I worked at Achievement First, I consistently received professional development and constructive feedback that pushed me to be better in my role. In addition, I was given opportunities to pursue projects outside the scope of my role, which I feel really helped me advance during my time at AF. I also really valued the emphasis on team and family. I was able to build meaningful and lasting relationships that continue to play an important role in my career outside of AF.

Cons

I can't think of anything in the three years I was employed there. My experience was very positive.

Pros

After an initial two years of teaching in Atlanta, Georgia, Achievement First provided me the opportunity to work for an organization of people that invested a lot of resources in developing it's teachers and leadership team. Professional development, coaching and a culture circumscribed around growth were huge positive factors during my time in the network, and more specifically at Endeavor middle school. The majority of staff are extremely passionate about both education and children and take their jobs and the work they do very seriously. Furthermore, there is a culture of people being committed to growing in every way possible to ensure the positive life trajectories for students.

Cons

It is a high-pressure environment. Teachers and school leaders believe in getting results and performing for kids. With that being said, teacher turnover rate is particularly high as it was typical for 2-3 teachers to leave in the middle of the school year. Work-life balance is not typically a lived experience. Teachers typically work 10-12 hour days minimum.
