Pros

It felt good to make a difference in the kids lives

Cons

Over worked and underpaid for the work. Expected to practically be a therapist without having any real training. The company has overall rules but each individual unit follows their own based on what the director or shift supervisors feels works best. Often times left alone with too many kids to watch for one person to feel safe; overnight or during the day. Company policy of ratio to worker is ridiculous, especially when dealing with a unit with several physically abusive kids.

Pros

DHS works with the company and favored other employees who were childlined when management threw them under the bus during a physical altercation. If you make it past ten years management won’t treat you as terrible as new employees. Some good employees but they often left due to injuries or suffering mentally. You help kids but it often requires you to suffer for doing so. There is overtime available but I wouldn’t recommend doing it often because it’s usually in a unit where many assaults occur and where staff are always quitting. Didn’t get stabbed or jumped by a group of kids despite being threatened often. Staff have okay health insurance that got them through when they got injured on the job.

Cons

Always left out of ratio where one staff has to control up to 20 violent teenage adults. Getting attacked while driving the youth in the community. Management thinks they can do whatever they want. Racism occurs and nothing is done about it. Females are expected to restrain adult males despite being physically disadvantaged. Work 9 days in a row all the time and often are mandated overtime because staff call off for the next shift.
