Pros

Aecon provided me the opportunity to work on interesting projects. Benefits included RRSP contributions, a share purchase plan and dental insurance.

Cons

Effectively all promotion in this division is done on the basis of who one knows or is related too, ie. if an employee is not connected to one of two or three families they can expect not to be promoted and never to have any choice in assignments. There is a disconnect between the head office and job sites. Salaries are low by industry standards Training and professional development are very poorly approached. There is a lack of uniformity between standards of the various managers, some are great while others are unsupportive and very difficult to work with.

Pros

Head office is out of the city so you avoid a lot of traffic getting to work. Competitive pay. Co-workers are friendly and are great team players. Good place to start a career in the construction industry.

Cons

Organizational structure is rather rigid. Not much room to move up unless someone else leaves or retires. Buggy old software.
